[8/28/2008] Updated post
The default speedcam file for Mio C230 has 0 speed camera which is not useful. I found this post that you can download the speed camera files for US. You will need to register in order to download the attached zip file. The file is called “speedcam script.zip”.
- Unzip the file and you find two speedcam files: EastSpeedcamUpdates.spud and WestSpeedcamUpdates.spud .
- Turn on C230 and connect it to your computer using a USB calbe. The location for the default speedcam file is F:MioMapMioMap2POISPEEDCAMSpeedcamUpdates.spud, if you use my hack prior to release 4 to unlock your Mio C230. If you use other hacks and you haven’t changed the MioMap directory to MioMap2, the default file isF:MioMapMioMapPOISPEEDCAMSpeedcamUpdates.spud .You also need to substitute the drive letter of your system if Mio Device is assigned a different drive letter other than F.
- Pick a speedcam file and copy to the directory.
- Delete or rename the original file. Change the name of speedcam file so the name is SpeedcamUpdates.spud .
- Reset the Mio.

Unfortunately the link to the US speed camera files is not longer available at rapidshare. All other links to it also used the same rapidshare link. Anyone know of a good link to it?
Thanks……….
I uploaded the file here.

amida168,
Thank you very much sir! I certainly appreciate it.
amida168,
i am a newbie…please, please be patient with me. =)
do i need to hack my c230 before i can update the speedcam file?
thank you so much!
Mytlyblesd,
No, you don’t have to unlock your c230 to update the speedcam file.
amida168,
thank you so much!
I’m actually a little confused. For some reason, my C230 does not even have the speed camera option. I seem to remember it being there before, but I’ve tinkered with the thing (hacked, etc), so is it possible that I’ve somehow removed the speed camera option? If so, how might I go about fixing that?
Thanks!
Eli,
If you still have the original DATA.ZIP file in MioMap2 directory, you can try to copy it back.
Didn’t work. What’s weird is that the option for speed cameras under general settings isn’t even there. Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Eli,
If that doesn’t work, you can use the DVD to restore your unit. Don’t forget to back up your changes if there are any.
I just got off the phone with Mio, and they said that the C230 doesn’t have speed cams as an option, only the C220. But I’m fairly certain it had that option originally. Will try to reset it.
That did the trick.
I’m having a similar problem as Eli did. After using the restore feature on the DVD the “Enable Safety Cameras” field is gone or flashing on and off. Any suggestions? Sometimes the Enable field will stay for a short time but after viewing some other screens it will disappear. It’s always gone after viewing the map screen, others will make it go away too.
I’m eager to unlock but I’m having trouble with this and fear I may need to send it back to Mio for a proper functioning unit.
A lot of the folks @ Mio have NO idea what thet are talking about! They told me that I would never be able to update my maps from the sorry 2007.1 maps (750,000 POI) that came with my c230. Within two days I was running 2007.1 maps with 12 million POI, LEGALLY, as I already held the license by purchasing the Mio c230! I got the feeling they were deliberatly trying to misinform me so that they could sell me different maps in the future.
That’s not all that seems shifty. My father has the c220. He had to send it back for a hardware repair. When it was returned, some of the software had also been “upgraded” which limited the funtionality he had in his original build…. including, but not limited to, stock POIs that had been eliminated. Good thing he had a complete backup of his flash drive out of the box.
The c230 most certainly DOES have speed camera funtionality. Always has. I’ve used it since day 1. It is found under ‘settings’ and then ‘general’. You should see ‘Enable Safety Cameras’. There is also the abilty to set options. If a re-build has elimiated your options, you need to have someone send you their original data.zip file as it existed out of the box. I have a copy that I will upload and post here if you did not make an initial backup.
What the c230 does NOT have, is any speed cam information (comes with zero cams). This file can be found with a quick Google search. It is called “SpeedcamUpdates.spud” They exist for both Eastern and Western US. The file then goes in the Flash\Miomap\POI\Speedcam folder. They are free and legal.
CD
Please do post a copy of your original data.zip file. I’ve loaded the WestSpeedcamUpdates.spud
into the SPEEDCAM folder without any luck at seeing a camera anywhere on the maps. I renamed it SpeedcamUpdates.spud and also renamed the original SpeedcamUpdates.spud to SpeedcamUpdates.spud2 I assume some cameras would be viewable on the map screen by scrolling over to known camera installations….??? None of this is on my Mio230 device even after manually adding them while driving, or adding the WestSpeedcamUpdates.spud file. After reading most of Amida’s tutorials I’m thinking I got a bad unit and same bad software on the DVD that came in the box. To me it seems crazy that after restoring from Mio’s DVD restore program things should be normal. I’ve done the restore 3 times and it still hides the Enable Safety Cameras in the General Settings screen.
Jim,
That is indeed strange. Eli got the function back by restoring the unit. Have you tried a different skin from my sites?
Like I said, my experience is that, at any given moment, Mio has different versions of software floating around there doing different things. Sometimes they “update” your software… but it is really a downgrade.
Here’s the original, out-of-the-box, data.zip.

I got my GPS yesterday and it seems to be having the same sped camera issues (or lack there of) as some of the other people have mentioned. It’s running version 3.3. The funny think is, I just noticed that when I unhook my usb connection from the GSP and the computer, the option shows up for half a second and then goes away. There is supposed to be TMC functionality with this device, but that appears to be nonexistant too! Geez…!
We don’t have speedcams but red light cameras in my area. Is there a way to get those in here?
SpeedCam file includes red light cameras.
Does it warn when you get close?
I was hoping to put these on my flash drive.
Yes, it does warn you when you get close.
Cool. Is it at all possible to put it on an sd card though? my memory internally is almost completely used up.
I think you have to put the speedcam file in the internal flash. If you are low on the internal space, you can move some map files to the SD card to make space. Please see me post about adding Canada map on where you can move the map files to. The other way is to make backup of the states you don’t use and delete them from the internal flash.
How can I tell from the GPS unit (front-end) how many speed camera’s are setup? I just got my unit yesterday, and could have sworn I saw it, but can’t see it now.
I want to check before I upgrade mine, so I know if it worked or not…thanks!
Ranjeet,
Mine came with 0 speed camera. I have heard that this feature is even disabled on newer unit.
Hello!
Congratulations for your job! Very good!
I`d like to know how can I show the Add/Edit SpeedCam button at the cockpit in iGO 2006 software, or how can I change the Add Pin button to Add/Edit SpeedCam.
Thanx a lot!
PauloZ – Sao Paulo – Brazil
OK – thanks for the info…
I put on the western US speed cam file, and while driving around in Vancouver, BC it went off a few times so I know I have something working 🙂
Is there a way to modify this file?
The only speed camera that it notifies me of is on the freeway about 1/2 mile before my exit. When it starts beeping it says the speed limit is 49. The actual speed limit is 65! Anything I can do without either removing the file or disabling the speed camera feature.
Thanks
I’m in Utah
Craig,
I don’t know if there is a way to modify this file directly on the computer. However, you can modify each speedcam’s info on C230.
Has anybody been able to get the SpeedCam Tool program found on the Mio website to work with a hacked Mio C230? My Mio has the 3.3Lite upgrade from Dan’s blog on it and I’ve loaded the speedcam.spud file that covers Illinois but when I attempted to try the Mio program, it will not acknowledge the Mio unit being connected to the computer. What is strange is the computer recognises that it is attached to a Mio device in the form of a drive letter and I can see all the directories. But the Mio SpeedCam program claims that a device is not connected.
Any help???
Bulldog,
I have tried the program. I never get it to work either. I remember reading something about the program is not compatible with Mio C230, but I am not sure.

How did Cd managed to load the 12 million POI map (at once I think) ? The map is too big for C230 to hold in flash disk. Can Miomap used the map database on the SD card ? How to ?
oe We have move the entire MioMap to SD card.
Just read this off the site :
“There are two locations for MioMap to store maps, the two locations are : F:\MioMap\MioMap\MAPS and G:\MioMap\MAPS”
So we should be able to place the 12 million POI map on the SD card that I assume is in the order of 2 GB. The user can then chose to disable one set of map, by changing one of the folder name to F:\MioMap\MioMap\MAPS_OFF and G:\MioMap\MAPS_OFF
Hello… using Speedcam update on MIO site… my MIO C230 is out ! “Please use MAP DVD to recover the software.
But it doesn’t work… Someone can teach me? How can-i put the software on my C230 ? (explorer Xp doesn’t work)
… “a little french”! ponctuel@free.fr
. THANKS A LOT
Ponctuel,
I am sorry to hear your trouble. Murphyfield has found that formatting your Mio’s internal flash drive might help. After you reformat the internal flash drive, you can try to use the DVD again.
AMIDA168
I am a total nubile at this so here are my hopes and questions:
1 – I hope this email gets through.
2 – I hope to get a response from you.
3 – I’m not sure of your web site address so would you please post it.
4 – From your posts you seem to be the guru of the Mio C230 GPS
Thank you for your time, efforts and investments into this device.
5 – So the question is: If you had to do all over again would you still go with MIO and especially with the C230?
6 – I am seeing prices of $170 for the C230 (WalMart) is this the going rate?
Thank you for you time and input,
GPS Pilot
GPS Pilot,
Thanks for your compliment. If I were to do it all over again, I think I am going to pick a Mio since it’s fun to hack it. I probably would get one with a widescreen display. $170 is kinda expensive. The going rate is about $130. You can check the price if you click on the Mio C230 in the Amazon.com side bar.
AMIDA168:
Thank you for the response and so quickly. I was not sure if my post was even going to get through.
Thanks for the advice and direction to Amazon.Com, I’ll give it a try, $130 sure beats $170.
Just a side thought. A friend of mine has a C220, are there any mods for that unit?
GPS Pilot
GPS Pilot,
Try http://www.mionav.com for any mods related to other Mio GPS.
Where can I get Australian maps for the C230. Other than Mio
Thanks
Hey Group:
I feel pretty good. I just purchased and received my new MIO C230. So far pretty good! I have only used it for some of the simple features, but now I need a little help for a more complicated (to me, anyway) operation.
I wish to enter my own POI, but the problem I am having is the basic logic of the C230.
The POI I want to enter has ONLY Lat & Lon.
So the questions are:
1 – In what screen do I enter LAT & LON data?
2 – In what screen do I enter the NAME for the POI?
3 – In what screen do I do the EDITing?
4 – From my experience with Lat & Lon there are a couple of different formats:
Example: Degrees – Minutes – Seconds –N40deg 37min 33.57sec x W075deg 40 min 12.88 sec
Or
N40deg 37.564min x W075deg 40.218min
BTW – This is the location of a public airport.
So my question is: When I have had slight luck of entering the LAT & LON the C230 converts it to a house address and street name. I don’t want that info, is there a way to keep LAT & LON.
OK, folks, that is enough question from this neophyte.
Thank you,
GPS Pilot
GPS Pilot,
You can enter POI as coordinate in Map view. Click on menu on the low left corner and then on Coordinate. After you enter it, you can then add it as POI. The address is added automatically and I don’t know if there is a way to get rid of it.
BTW, you can use Google Earth to enter that info and import it to C230. Take a look at my post regarding adding custom POIs.
AMIDA168:
Thank you for the responce. I had all weekend to ply with the unit and I think I have the steps mastered in saving Lat & Lon numbers.
Now, for my next issue / question:
I was away from home and needed to get to a HOME DEPOT, LOWE’s and KHOLES (sp on the last one). But no matter where I did the SEARCH I could not find the store. AND it would only let me enter as many letters as there were matches too. exp. HOME Dxxx
I tried doing a complete search and a narrowed shearch by going to SHOPPING. Nothing came up with a match.
The MIO is a C230 with Version 3.3.
Any ideas what is going on?
Thank you Amida & group.
GPS Pilot
GPS Pilot,
The POIs on C230 is limited. That’s why you cannot find those stores. You can try those 12M POIs maps.
Hi;
I have the version 4 sd card unlock hack on my C230 (Canadian version), V 3.3, 2007.07 maps, QuickSilver CarLocator skin;
added the speedcam files in, drove around town and to work (Markham, ON), all the potential speed traps I am familiar with (and a few I didn’t know about), were spot on, and the alarms went off accordingly;
works as advertised for me,
kudos,
tc
HI,
I’ve cracked my mio c230 with Release 4.1. But how can I see the allowed speed during the navigation? I saw screenshots where it is shown but i never was able to see it on my mio, even not uncracked. I’ve checked all the .ui data. Thx for some feedback. Greetings from Germany. Marc
In the SYS.TXT file, make sure
show_speed_limit=1
is in the [debug] section. Note that not every map has speed limit information. I never see the speed limit on my C230 even though I have that option turned on.
Thank you,
I have insert that into my sys.txt but there is no speed limit information as you already mentioned. A shame, because nearly all other navi systems have this feature. But in my eyes there must be an information availabe almost everywhere, because with this information the navi calculates the time to destination. Correct me if I’m wrong. Can somebody send me his data.zip? Maybe the european is different and has limitations in it.
I purchased my C230 a few months ago for $149, but I got a $40 mail-in rebate. $109 is a great price for a GPS like this.
Where can I find the Map updates? I’ve checked the Mio website, but I see nothing there. I will Google search later, but I thought I’d asked here as I begin my search.
Thanks in advance.
